Right now, gourmet chalet companies are serving up the most incredible short-break and holiday packages for those with a taste for the finer things in life. There’s really nothing like enjoying the great outdoors, in order to return home with a huge appetite and the promise of something decadent to come.

But assuming your time at your chosen luxury catered chalets in France is limited, what kinds of dishes are not to be missed? There’s incredible variety spanning local, national and international cuisines alike, but what should you ensure you do not leave without first sampling?

Whichever way you look at it, you really cannot go wrong mixing potatoes, cheese and bacon…you just can’t! In this neck of the woods, this is the type of dish you order only in instances of where you intend to spend the next few hours at least doing absolutely nothing at all. Tartiflette is the most decadently delicious combination of skin-on sliced potatoes, onions, garlic and plenty of smoked bacon – all of which are summarily topped with a full wheel of reblochon cheese. Contrary to popular belief, this is by no means a traditional local recipe and nor is it been passed from one generation to the next. It actually came to be as recently as the 80s when it was first served up in a number of Tarantaise resorts. Truly heavenly with a glass of medium dry red wine.

Soupe Aux Callioux

Just in case you were wondering, the answer is yes – cailloux are pebbles. But you’re not actually expected to eat them in this instance – this unique soup packed with beautiful local vegetables is cooked in a large pot that contains a handful of relatively large stones. The stones are added to bruise, mash and generally wreak havoc with the vegetables, resulting in a delightfully unique taste and texture. Superb with a hunk of freshly baked bread and a crisp and dry white wine.


If cheese happens to be your thing, you’ve probably figured out by now you’re in the right place. Raclette is yet another unmissable dish to sample while in town, which basically involves placing a huge chunk of cheese in front of an open fire, melting it down before scraping it onto a plate with plenty of boiled potatoes. It is traditionally served with air-dried beef, pickled onions and mini gherkins, though you’ll find plenty of different spins on the classic. A surprisingly enjoyable main to wash down with a glass of local beer.

Tarte Aux Myrtilles

Last but not least, those with a sweet tooth will find themselves in heaven with Tarte Aux Myrtilles. It’s basically the French take on a classic fruit tart – rich vanilla custard and crisp pastry topped with delightfully tangy blueberries. If you are feeling adventurous, feel free to order yours with an accompanying measure of Genepi – the perfect end to any meal which shares a great many similarities with absinthe.
