Flow State: The Unique Way to Enhance Your Skiing Performance

22nd August 2017

As if the exceptional scenery, sublime cuisine, and extreme sports weren’t enough to draw you to the French Alps, there’s a lesser-known gem just waiting to be discovered. Its name? Flow. With places like the French Alps, it has been always been known to contain lively ski resorts like Meribel and Courchevel, but what happens when we discover another side to these beautiful mountains and enhance our skiing performance when we achieve our flow state?

Be In The Zone

‘In positive psychology, flow, also known as the zone, is the mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity. In essence, flow is characterized by complete absorption in what one does and loses sense of space and time.’

People all over the world can experience it, sometimes only once or twice, others more frequently; it all depends on what you get up to. Heading into the mountains, including the French Alps provides the perfect setting for experiencing flow. When you embark upon an activity, such as skiing, rock climbing, mountaineering and so forth, your mind becomes totally engrossed in what you are doing, mostly out of necessity for one’s safety, but also as a result of the composure of being within the mountains and amongst the rustic landscapes where our minds belong.

Go Beyond Your Boundaries

“The best moments in our lives are not the passive, receptive, relaxing times… The best moments usually occur if a person’s body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile.” ~ Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (1990, p. 3)

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, a Hungarian psychologist who discovered the concept of ‘flow’ explains how the best moments in our lives are those where we push ourselves out of our comfort zone, go beyond our normal boundaries, and do something extraordinary. Instead of spending our days sitting in front of the computer, answering emails and picking up calls. We should take the time to travel somewhere new and try out new challenges like skiing, mountaineering, and snowboarding. It’s highly likely you’ll be surprised at what you discover about yourself, and how much of a hunger you’ll develop for even more adventure.

Flow is a state of mind that leaves no mental capacity for anything other than the moment you are in. There is no room to worry about your office emails, what you fancy eating this evening or even packing your children’s bags to get ready to fly home! Your worries will become non-existent when you achieve the flow. So, experience this moment, cherish it while it lasts!

So, this Winter, drop your phones, tablets, emails and phone calls, and book your accommodation to the French Alps to gain something more than just a new profile picture and some bad tan lines! Discover something within yourself that perhaps has never before been unearthed.
